Namibia is a sparsely populated land, twice the size of
California, that became a German protectorate in 1884 and part of
South Africa in 1915. South Africa built military bases and
imposed apartheid shortly thereafter. The United Nations
objected to this imposition and in 1968 the General Assembly
named the region Namibia. In 1977, white inhabitants voted in
favor of a proposition for a multi-racial interim government that
would lead to independence. The South-West Africa People's
Organization (SWAPO) rejected the plan and launched a guerrilla
war. Major national elections were held again in 1978 for the
assembly, but blacks were not allowed to participate in the
voting. By 1983, the Namibian constituent assembly was dissolved
and on January 18th South Africa resumed direct control over the
territory. @
